Bold Interior Design for Coconut Grove Residences

I have loved Coconut Grove since I was a kid.  Growing up in Miami spoiled me with its constant sunshine and eclectic neighborhoods.  I have always loved the artistic history of The Grove.  It was always a curious mix of old and new, past and present.  It was inspiring.  When I set out to start my interior design studio, I knew I wanted to work in homes in The Grove.  It is a neighborhood that really reflects my approach to interiors.  It's a philosophy I call modern American maximalism — layered color, fearless pattern, and personality-forward spaces designed for clients who want their homes to feel as intentional as a great story.  Over the years, I've had the honor of working on modern and historic homes in The Grove and its surrounding neighborhoods.  

A Different Kind of Design

Before a client calls me their interior designer, I think of myself as a storyteller. That's not a metaphor — it's the actual foundation of how I approach interior design for my projects in Coconut Grove.

Each property I've worked on in the area, be it Matheson, Park Ave, or High Pines, to name a few, has been a journey in curiosity.  For one, it was asking the question of how you can update while preserving the 1930s charm.  For another, it was all about how do we take a literal white box and give it personality, soul and, more importantly, a point of view.

This is Coconut Grove, after all — a neighborhood defined by a maverick spirit that is artsy, creative, and very curious!

mr alex TATE is an interior design studio founded by Alex Alonso.  Alex started the studio with a vision of defining what he calls Modern American Maximalism - a bold, layered design philosophy built on fearless curation, where color, pattern, and texture mingle in an eclectic space.  In The Grove, his studio is best known for his historical remodels like the Park Avenue project and maximalist layers onto a bold, modern space like his Matheson project.  His projects have received national recognition in publications like The Wall Street Journal and The Robb Report.  His perspective on design has been showcased in industry publications like Architectural Digest and Elle Decor.  The studio's work stands out from the typical modern, minimalist Miami design by embracing color and personality versus opting for neutral, minimal palettes.  Beyond Miami, his client roster spans nationally across the US and internationally to the Caribbean, the UK, and the EU.  

Growing up in Miami gave me intimate knowledge of what makes Coconut Grove & South Miami special. This neighborhood has always been an artistic haven with its own rhythm. The architecture tells the story—vintage homes alongside new construction, traditional design meeting modern aesthetics, creating a landscape that celebrates architectural diversity.  I still recall the days of The Bakery Center in South Miami with its glass dome and the original CocoWalk...All that coral pink, tubular steel railing.  Wowsers!
